Provide informed, insightful coverage of education statewide, with a strong focus on equity. Deliver a steady stream of clear, concise, conversational stories that inform, entertain and result in a better informed electorate.

Salary Range: $58,000-$62,000

Key Job Responsibilities

  • Contribute to the Crosscut news and politics section with a steady stream of stories pitched by you and/or assigned by the editor.
  • Help Crosscut develop this new area of coverage by focusing on source and story development and discovering what it means to cover education with an equity and inclusion lens.
  • Build on skills in storytelling, story planning, data analysis and in-depth reporting.
  • Adapt to Crosscut’s approach of listening to and responding to reader questions and ideas. Think about how stories and projects can reach new communities and audiences across the region.
  • Deliver stories each week that meet the highest journalistic and organizational standards for fairness, thoroughness, accuracy and quality.
  • Ability and excitement to tell stories off the education beat, although most of this job will focus on youth and education.
  • Collaborate with video producers, photographers, audience engagement editors and web designers to shape stories that are visually compelling and incorporate a range of multimedia.
  • Participate in the development of various modes of journalism, including podcasting, live events and video storytelling.
  • Serve as a Crosscut representative at community and partner events, industry gatherings and in other formal settings.

. Requirements:

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s Degree in broadcasting, journalism, communications, new media, business, or a related field or equivalent experience required
  • Two-to-three years of experience as a writer or editor, either in a deadline-oriented newsroom or as a freelancer.
  • Demonstrated success in working collaboratively with peers; significant experience organizing and managing multiple priorities, and in developing and managing projects
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Enthusiasm for the role of public media in a changing journalism environment
  • Deep understanding of journalism ethics and practices, with nonprofit or public media experience preferred
  • Familiarity and professionalism with the role of social media in news gathering.
  • Ability to work remotely during the current office closure. Ability to work a hybrid of remote work and on-site work when the office reopens.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to view data on a computer screen for long periods of time
  • Ability to type on a keyboard for long periods of time
  • Ability to sit or stand for extended periods
